Twitter officially launched its subscription service for $8/month, which includes a redesign of Twitter Blue.

Elon Musk, who officially acquired the social media giant last week, quickly got to work on a way to monetize how people get blue checks.

Now, those who pay the new $8 monthly fee for Twitter Blue (up from six.49 per month) can take the same checks that were previously given to public figures including celebrities, companies and journalists.

Twitter Blue allows users to improve their reading experience through editing tweets and an improved reader mode.

However, a check is made up of a new subscription. As part of the new update, iOS users can download the blue checkmark in conjunction with their names to receive the blue checkmark, just like the celebrities, corporations and politicians you follow. It’s unclear when Android comes out.

Critics previously expressed concern that such a system would diverge the intended meaning of verification, the aim of combating impersonations and fake news. It’s still unknown what’ll happen now that anyone can get a check.

Musks first week as Twitter head was met with a lot of controversy, including his involvement in a conspiracy theory related to the abuse of Paul Pelosi and the layoffs for half of Twitter’s staff.
